I notice everyday objects through my own unique lens…a shadow cast on the pavement, cloud formations on a beautiful summer day, the pattern formed by a footprint in the sand. I’m inspired by the way weathered paint or billboards begin to peel and expose a rich history of all that came before. I love color, geometric shapes and text. I breathe in the intricacies of the way light and shadow play, line and form coexist, positive and negative space dance. I’m an active observer of life. I create in the moment, allowing my imagination to run free. I make marks and I respond to those marks. My creative process becomes one of call and response, and I liken it to engaging in conversation without actually ever saying a word. It's about a feeling or an emotion, and I find myself being astutely keyed in as each piece reveals new bits of information for me to respond to. I become a vessel to something greater than myself. Each piece begins with a focus on layers; be they paint, collage, pencil, collected ephemera or any combination of these materials. There is such joy in the freedom of putting many different media to work, and I believe the layering process to be a metaphor for life. I create from a place deep within my soul. Art is a universal language that has the ability to tie us all together. My work is inspired by the fact that we each have a story, and while no two of us are exactly alike, we are all connected in some magical way. My hope is that my work is open enough to encourage you to see your own story within it. Witnessing that spark of connection brings me pure joy.
