The ability of artwork to tell a story is central to my work. Much of my work explores family, cultural and community history, a focus that grew out of my deep personal involvement in family history as a consulting genealogist. I began this work with a series of artwork on my own family history. When I went to Lithuania to study Yiddish at the Vilnius Yiddish Institute, my artwork expanded to tell the story of the “negative space” created by the absence of former Jewish communities, the impact of the Holocaust and the traces that remain. My series on my Polish ancestral town seeks to recreate the presence of the former Jewish community as viewed through a hole in time. These series of work were exhibited in both England and Poland. I came full circle when I interviewed Jewish immigrants who lived in Minnesota and created artwork on their stories. I published artwork and story in the book We Spoke Jewish: A Legacy in Stories. As a participant and Resident Writer in the Jewish Artists’ Lab since 2013, I also create work on thought-provoking themes informed by Jewish text. I paint out of my studio in the California Building in NE Minneapolis.
