Artist Statement

Weaving; that's how I create. Working mainly on a floor loom, I examine the intersection of warp and weft and the many ways in which this occurs. Endless color combinations with varying yarn and textures are utilized, allowing me to create functional and artistic pieces. I alternate these options, pushing my imagination--new possibilities popping up as I weave. I play with non-traditional color combinations for my functional pieces, watching as new possibilities emerge. In my arty pieces, I take standard structures, distorting and pushing the limits of the original structure within the confines of the warp and weft. Nature, color and spiritual surroundings inspire my art.

Sandy M. Baron, a weaver since 1996, became interested in weaving while attending college where she observed the Loom Room. She was not able to explore weaving during that time but instead went on to study Interior Design and Textile Science, earning a BS from the University of WI and a MS from the University of MN. After working in both fields and dabbling in many artistic media, she finally found her niche in the fiber arts and mixed media. Weaving and dyeing became her main focus shortly after she decided to take a weaving class at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts with Traudi Bestler. It became the connection she was looking for, combining her passions of art and science.
Since then she has explored many structures within weaving, finally deciding she enjoys pushing the limits of traditional weaving structures and colors. Sandy has also created many original, privately commissioned hand-woven tallitot that can be seen throughout the Minneapolis community. She also creates many functional items for the home in addition to arty pieces for display. Sandy has exhibited in juried shows at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts and widely exhibited themed exhibitions with the Interfaith Artist Circle https://www.interfaithartistcircle.com(formerly the Jewish Women Artists' Circle). Additionally, Sandy has taught weaving and art sessions at various senior facilities throughout the metro area.
I am available for teaching basic weaving and/or art classes at senior facilities(when safe). I am also available for basic weaving workshops, whether on floor looms, cardboard looms or other handmade looms.
