Artist Statement
Calligraphy has been the focus of my work, working in many lettering styles, even creating digital fonts for my Hebrew lettering, and creating work in English, Hebrew, Yiddish and recently in Solitreo, a cursive Ladino lettering style. Much of my work, for example, ketubot, includes decorative elements inspired by nature, folk art, graphic designs; they may include painting and/or papercutting. I produce work on commission and also sell printed work, printed in my studio.
Peggy Davis’ introduction to Hebrew calligraphy was in Jerusalem, with Rabbi Joseph Shachter. In 1980 she began working as a Hebrew and English calligrapher, studying with internationally-known teachers through the Colleagues of Calligraphy. This led to private study with Ismar David in New York, an eminent Hebrew & English calligrapher of the 20th century. She has created work for Temple Israel, Beth Jacob, Temple of Aaron, Beth El congregations and other institutions farther afield. Her work includes the many invitations and ketubot made for people throughout the Twin Cities and around the country, and she continues to do this work.
Workshops available on Hebrew lettering and illumination. Always willing to consult on project ideas.
