Artist Statement

I don’t know how I will finish when I start, except that there is something within that I want to express, something that I want to build, something that I want to say. Painting is not the same as speech, even when figural. We leap to story, but it is the story behind the story, behind speech, that is my subject matter. Consider: “Attention is the beginning of devotion.” And “Where danger lies, there deliverance also grows.” I was trained to paint every day, yet, the artist himself must wait for something to happen. Stillness is as important as action. On my good days I am a painter. On my best moments, I am someone who is trying to uncover and describe something new, so that we can have it within our range of humanity. That should be enough.

Owen Brown CV

I studied at California College of Arts in Oakland, California, and I have degrees from Yale and the University of Chicago. For many years I supported my art and my family by working as an entrepreneur in the Bay Area. After 30 years in San Francisco, I moved to Minneapolis in 2016.

I have exhibited in juried shows and solo exhibits throughout the United States. My works have been acquired by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Nature Conservancy, and the Weisman Museum of Minneapolis, and can be found in collections in this country, Europe, and Asia. I had residencies at Air Le Parc in France in 2017, and at the Land Institute in Kansas in 2018, where I created my first installation: “Units of Measure.”

My art has been reviewed in The San Francisco Chronicle, Vostos, the Exeter Bulletin, The Land Report, A2, and Paragon. Meridian Gallery Press published a monograph of my work for the opening of my show “Ideasthesia.” My work was also included in the Society for Art Publications of the America’s final publication: “Trees of the Field.”

I am represented nationally by Holly Hunt and Art Force, and I show regionally at Veronique Wantz and Grand Hand.

I was an invitee at Art Prize Nine and invited to show at the now-cancelled 2020 Kochi Biennale, in Kochi, India.
