Artist Statement

I write poems because I wouldn’t know what to say without them. I make art because I grew up learning about the world through the wordless magic beheld in the glass cases of museums, and by drawing my way through the confusion, pain, and joy of childhood. All the arts still seem like magic to me because they shine a light on the best and worst of human existence, and they show everyone that change for the better can be imagined.

I have made art and written since I was seven years old, and now I fully appreciate one power of shared expression: solace. Optimism overtakes rage for awhile when a moment of trauma is transformed into a poem or an artwork and shared with the wider world, hopefully spreading some empathy too. My visual, spoken, and/or written work has been featured in: Textile Center of MN, Bet Gavriel Arts Center, Minnesota Center for Book Arts, Moon Palace Books, Bluestockings, Brecht Forum, Cornelia Street Café, public libraries, Vulva Riot, Queer Voices, A Slant of Light, Nickel Empire, lifeblood, Just Like A Girl, gatherings, twice in a blue moon, Evergreen Chronicles, Equal Time, Woodstock Poetry Society.
Can workshop or edit written pieces and manuscripts, coach making artworks on difficult subject matter or experiences, act as a sounding board to brainstorm ideas for artworks, critique writing and artwork, create written statements and bios, teach accordion-fold book arts and mixed-media art making.
