Artist Statement

I wish for my paintings to be viewed from a distance and then at close range. Having professional exposure to trauma over decades has been easier to tolerate through many activities, including time making art, diving into the materials and the experience itself, with less focus on subject matter.

Alice Buckner was born in Boston, MA in 1960. She studied art from a young age in Boston at Museum of Fine Arts, Newton Public Schools, the Buckingham Browne & Nichols School (BB&N) and the de Cordova Museum. A Bennington art alumni taught at BB&N: Constance Holden. Constance had studied in Paris with the master Leger.

On the urging of Constance Holden, Alice attended Bennington. Her painting instructor in college was Pat Adams. Along with lifelong painting, Alice has enjoyed a career in business, organization development, government, and social justice. Alice was also recognized during college by the American Academy of Poets.

Buckner’s influences were active from the 1930’s to 1960’s, along with 1980’s non-representational artists, particularly those at the Nielson Gallery on Newbury Street in Boston from 1977 to 1985. She has been celebrated for painting in parking lots, painting to music, painting on an Amtrak train, and for her brush work.

Alice moved from Massachusetts to Minneapolis in 2023 and works at The Karen Organization of Minnesota.
While I am not currently teaching, in the past I have faciliated expressive therapy through mixed media on paper with youth experiencing trauma and poverty. I am a former organization development consultant and adjunct professor. I have served as a yoga teacher, executive coach and mentor. I continue to mentor people experiencing challenges in the U.S.
