Artist Statement

I write poetry to better understand the limits of language. How can language describe pain, both immediate and generational? How is language changed by trauma? How can language witness historical and present atrocities? What is the language we require for solidarity, love, hope, reparation? I find poetry necessary for myself to plumb these questions, and most frequently process them through poems about Jewish generational trauma. In addition to Jewish studies, my poetry practice is informed by diaspora studies, queer studies, disability studies, reparative poetics, documentary poetics, and translation studies.

Xander Gershberg (he/him) is a poet, lyricist, educator, and editor of Spout Press. Xander received his BA in English and Creative Writing from Macalester College and is now an MFA in Creative Writing (Poetry) candidate at Virginia Tech. His work has been published in Poetry Online and lyrics performed by the ensemble Sputter Box. In his free time, he likes to volunteer with local justice organizations and get lost in maps.
I am available for consulting poetry and creative prose in the form of developmental editing, workshop-style feedback. I also have extensive experience tutoring in compositional and application writing, and am available for hire on a freelance basis.

I am also available to serve as a teaching artist, classroom speaker, panelist, or contest judge.
